A wisecracking space pirate with a cigar in his teeth, a laser cannon hidden in his left arm and a partner made of living chrome: Cobra has been one of manga's coolest heroes since Buichi Terasawa created him in the late 1970s. Space Adventure Cobra: The Awakening, from developer Magic Pockets and publisher Microids, finally brings him to modern consoles as an action platformer.

The game retells the opening arc of the classic early-1980s anime, covering its first twelve episodes, and it does so with real affection, using clips from Osamu Dezaki's original animation and music from the show to carry the story between levels. You run, jump and blast your way through each stage with Cobra's legendary Psychogun, and its signature trick is the guided shot: time freezes while you steer the blast through a whole line of enemies, a move that doubles as a puzzle-solving tool. Some shielded foes call for Cobra's other tricks, and the loyal Lady Armaroid is never far from the story.

Reviews have been mixed at best, with the platforming judged far less polished than the presentation, but the storytelling and the retro anime styling are clearly where the developers poured their love. Its real audience is the Cobra faithful, who finally get to charge the Psychogun with their own hands, along with collectors of anime-licensed games who like keeping niche, character-driven releases like this on their PlayStation 5 shelf.
