Item Description

Every fighter in Soul Calibur IV is wearing armor that can break. Land enough heavy hits on a guarding opponent and pieces of their gear shatter off mid-round, and if you drain their Soul Gauge completely you can end the fight on the spot with a Critical Finish. Those touches gave Project Soul's 2008 entry a sense of escalating danger, where every round feels a little more desperate than the last, and they set it apart from the earlier games in Namco's weapon-based series.

The roster brings back series mainstays like Mitsurugi, Ivy, Nightmare, Siegfried, Taki, Cervantes, Voldo and Sophitia, and introduces Hilde, a knight who fights with a spear and short sword, and Algol, the Hero King who serves as the final boss. Then there is the guest list. On PlayStation 3, Darth Vader joins the fight with his lightsaber and Force powers, and The Apprentice from Star Wars: The Force Unleashed can be unlocked too, while Yoda went to the Xbox 360 version. A handful of bonus fighters designed by guest Japanese artists round out the cast.

Away from straight versus play, the Tower of Lost Souls stacks up floors of challenge battles with their own conditions, Story mode gives each fighter a run at the eternal struggle over Soul Edge and Soul Calibur, and Character Creation lets you build your own warrior from a huge wardrobe of equipment, with gear that grants special skills. Soul Calibur IV was also the first game in the series built with online play in mind.

Underneath the extras is the same eight-way movement, ring-out tension and weapon-weighted combat that made the series a fighting game favorite, now running in high definition for the first time. Pick it up for couch matches with a friend, for the creation suite, or for the gloriously strange sight of Darth Vader trading blows with Voldo.
