Item Description

Ask Game Gear fans to name the best Sonic on the handheld and Triple Trouble is the answer you will hear most often. Aspect's 1994 follow-up to Sonic Chaos lets you play as Sonic or Tails, and it crowds the stage with rivals. Dr. Robotnik is building a super-weapon and has tricked Knuckles, fresh from his Genesis debut in Sonic 3, into helping him collect the Chaos Emeralds, while a brand-new treasure hunter, Nack the Weasel, wants the gems for himself. Robotnik, Knuckles and Nack are the triple trouble of the title, and together they give the game a scrappy, crowded energy the earlier 8-bit Sonics never had.

Six zones stretch from the tropical Great Turquoise Zone through Sunset Park and Meta Junglira to the snowfields of Robotnik Winter, the waterlogged Tidal Plant and the final Atomic Destroyer. Picking a character changes how you tackle them. Tails can take to the air and reach paths Sonic can only look at, while Sonic gets new gadgets of his own, including a jet board for ripping across snow and water. Tails also has the Sea Fox, a little submarine for zipping through underwater sections, and those vehicle moments give the stages a variety that is remarkable for a cartridge this small.

Aspect clearly learned from its earlier handheld Sonics. The sprites are big and lively, the pace is quick, Knuckles keeps popping up to get in Sonic's way, and Nack turns up to fight for the Emeralds himself. It plays like the work of a team that finally had the measure of the Game Gear and wanted to show what an 8-bit Sonic could look like with 16-bit ambitions.

Nack's story did not end here, either. Known in Japan as Fang the Sniper, he went on to race in Sonic Drift 2, brawl in the arcade Sonic the Fighters and return as a villain in Sonic Superstars nearly thirty years after his debut, so Triple Trouble is where one of the series' most enduring cult characters began. For an 8-bit Sonic that plays fast, lets Tails share the spotlight and introduced a character Sega eventually brought back, this is the Game Gear cartridge to play.
