Item Description
Tails is in trouble, and that is the first clue this is not the Sonic 2 most people remember. Built by Aspect in 1992 for Sega's 8-bit hardware, the Game Gear Sonic the Hedgehog 2 shares only a name with the Genesis blockbuster. It is a completely separate game, designed for the handheld and released in near-identical form on the Master System, and it gives Miles "Tails" Prower one of his very first appearances in an unexpected role: hostage. Dr. Robotnik has kidnapped him and wants the Chaos Emeralds as ransom, so Sonic sets out to settle things on his own.
Seven zones of three acts each send him deep underground, high into the clouds and across open water, and the game is full of rides and gimmicks. Mine carts rattle through the Underground Zone, hang gliders carry him across Sky High Zone, and later stages ask him to skim the surface of the water and find his way through twisting pipe mazes. Sonic can now smash through certain walls, and rings scattered by a hit can be grabbed back before they vanish, a small change that makes the action feel closer to the 16-bit games.
It is also tougher than its bright colors suggest. The Game Gear screen shows less of each stage than the Master System version does, so blind drops and fast-moving hazards reward quick reactions and a good memory, and the Underground Zone boss has a fearsome reputation as a first-zone fight. Chaos Emeralds are hidden along the way, and tracking them down decides whether Sonic reaches the true final zone and the good ending, which gives every stage a reason to be explored rather than just sprinted through.
Aspect would go on to make Sonic Chaos and Sonic Triple Trouble, and the confidence of those later handheld games starts here, along with a soundtrack 8-bit Sonic fans still hum. On original hardware it is a smaller, stranger and more deliberate Sonic than the one on the Genesis, and proof that Sega's handheld team was writing its own chapter of the series rather than shrinking someone else's.

About the game
This is a completely different game than its 16-bit counterpart on the Genesis/Mega Drive, and was originally released on the Sega Game Gear and Master System. The Sonic the Hedgehog 2 game marks the debut of Miles ‘Tails’ Prower, Sonic’s best pal, who is then seen recurring in the series. Assist Sonic to rescue Tails, who has been kidnapped by Dr. Robotnik in this platform video game. In exchange of Tails’ safety in this Sega Game Gear video game, the evil scientist asks that the six Chaos Emeralds be given away to six robots, so he can dominate the entire globe. With advanced ability of Sonic to smash through walls and grab back scattered rings hit by enemy, this platform video game is made even more exciting. Join the protagonist in the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 game as he rides a mine cart, a hang glider or skims through water surface in his rescue attempt. With seven zones and three acts each, this Sega Game Gear video game is a rollercoaster ride where you get rewarded at the end of each act.
