Item Description

The Game Gear's Sonic the Hedgehog is not a shrunken copy of the Genesis game. It is the 8-bit Sonic, built separately by Ancient, the studio Yuzo Koshiro founded, and it has its own zones, its own bosses and its own slower, more exploratory rhythm. Green Hill is here, but so are Bridge, Jungle, Labyrinth, Scrap Brain and Sky Base, and most of them exist nowhere else in the series.

Bridge Zone sends Sonic racing across collapsing log bridges, Jungle Zone's second act turns into a vertical climb up a waterfall, and Sky Base ends the adventure among airships and crackling lightning. The third act of every zone is a compact showdown with Robotnik, and each one asks you to learn a pattern rather than simply mash your way through. The Chaos Emeralds are hidden inside the acts themselves rather than in a separate bonus stage, which makes every level worth combing for secret paths, and finding all six is the only way to see the good ending. Skipping ahead is easy; doing it properly means slowing down, testing walls and ledges, and replaying acts until the layout clicks. This Game Gear version moves some of the emerald hiding spots and changes some of the bosses from the Master System release, and the tighter handheld screen makes careful play pay off.

Koshiro's soundtrack is a big reason players still talk about it. He arranged Masato Nakamura's famous Green Hill theme for the 8-bit sound chip and wrote new tracks for the original zones, and the Bridge Zone music in particular has become a fan favorite in its own right.

This is Sonic's first handheld game, released in 1991, and the start of the 8-bit Sonic line that ran alongside the Genesis games with its own sequels and its own ideas. Playing it on the Game Gear is the way to experience Ancient's version as most kids first did, a different take on Sonic that rewards curiosity as much as speed.
