Fourteen Genesis games on one PlayStation 2 disc, plus six Game Gear titles on top: Sonic Mega Collection Plus is the kind of compilation that turns an evening into a tour of Sega's 16-bit golden age. An expanded take on the GameCube's Sonic Mega Collection, it gathers the core Sonic platformers alongside some of the Genesis library's best non-Sonic gems.

The headliners are all here: Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, along with Sonic 3D Blast, Sonic Spinball and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. Keep playing and the collection opens up further, unlocking the famous Sonic & Knuckles lock-on combinations, Knuckles in Sonic 2, the complete Sonic 3 & Knuckles and the endless Blue Sphere, plus Flicky, Ristar, The Ooze and Comix Zone. Ristar and Comix Zone in particular rank among the most inventive games Sega put out on the Genesis, and finding them here is a real bonus, even if the unlocks take some persistence.

The Plus edition adds six Game Gear games to the lineup: Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic Chaos, Sonic Blast, Sonic Drift, Sonic Labyrinth and the handheld Mean Bean Machine. Critics found the Game Gear ports the weakest part of the package, but they make a fun curiosity if Sega's handheld passed you by. More useful is the save-state feature in every game, which lets you suspend mid-level and makes a full Sonic 3 & Knuckles run far more manageable.

Rounding out the disc are high-resolution scans of the original instruction manuals, more than a hundred Archie Comics Sonic cover scans, an illustration gallery stretching into newer games, and storyboards and renders from Sonic Heroes. It is a well-curated package that captures what made Sonic matter in the first place: speed, color, clever level design and some of the best music of the 16-bit era, with the Genesis classics and their lock-on extras all on a single PS2 disc.
