Sonic & Knuckles is one of the most inventive releases of the 16-bit era — a standalone Genesis game that also functions as an expansion module for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 through its iconic "Lock-On Technology" cartridge pass-through slot built right into the top. Released in 1994, it lets you play as Knuckles the Echidna in his debut starring role, scaling walls and gliding across the landmark zones of the Floating Island with his signature moves. It was a genuinely ambitious piece of hardware design at a time when developers were still pushing the Genesis to its absolute limits.
Playing as Knuckles fundamentally changes how you experience the game's stages. Where Sonic blazes through on pure speed, Knuckles opens up hidden paths, scales sheer cliff faces, and reaches areas of each zone that Sonic simply cannot reach.
