Item Description

Dr. Eggman has built an amusement park in space, chained a ring of planets around it and assured everyone that his intentions are entirely good. Naturally, they are not. Sonic Colors is the adventure in which Sonic discovers the Wisps, small alien creatures being harvested for their energy, and borrows their powers to tear through the park's attractions and set them free.

Those Wisps are what make the game. Cyan Laser turns Sonic into a ricocheting beam of light, Yellow Drill burrows him through the ground, Orange Rocket blasts him skyward and Pink Spikes lets him cling to walls and ceilings, and every stage is laid out to reward finding where each power opens a hidden route. Levels mix blistering 3D boost runs with tight 2D platforming across worlds such as Tropical Resort, Sweet Mountain, Starlight Carnival, Aquarium Park and Asteroid Coaster, and the pacing is far more focused than the 3D Sonic games that came just before it.

Sonic Colors debuted on the Wii in 2010 as a Nintendo exclusive, was widely hailed as a return to form for the series, and marked Roger Craig Smith's debut as the voice of Sonic. Blind Squirrel Entertainment's 2021 remaster brought it to PlayStation for the first time with a sharper widescreen presentation at 60 frames per second, a remixed soundtrack alongside the original, and a brand-new Jade Ghost Wisp that lets Sonic phase through solid walls. Rival Rush adds races against Metal Sonic, and tokens earned in the park unlock customization options for Sonic's look.

The music, led by Tomoya Ohtani and topped by the theme song “Reach for the Stars,” is bright, bouncy and a big part of why the game is so fondly remembered. On PS4 this is the easiest way to play a Sonic adventure that sat on Nintendo hardware for more than a decade, and a cheerful reminder of how good the series gets when it commits to speed, color and imagination.
