Item Description

Pick Tails at the title screen and Sonic Chaos lets him do the thing every Sonic 2 player wished for: fly. Tap jump in midair and he hovers right over the spikes, pits and traps that would trip up his blue friend. It was the first time a Sonic game on Sega's 8-bit systems made Tails a separate playable character with his own abilities, and it changes the whole feel of the levels.

Sonic has new tricks of his own. He gets the Super Peel-Out from Sonic CD for instant top speed, and Rocket Shoes monitors send him blasting through the air for a few glorious seconds (Tails cannot use them and gets bonus rings instead). The adventure spans six zones of three acts each, from the bright loops of Turquoise Hill to the industrial Mecha Green Hill, with the third act of every zone saved for a showdown with one of Robotnik's machines. Grab 100 rings in a stage and you warp to a special stage holding a Chaos Emerald, and how many emeralds you recover decides which ending you see.

Aspect developed it as the studio's second Sonic game, taking the bones of the 8-bit Sonic 2 and making everything faster, bigger and better-looking. Known in Japan as Sonic & Tails, it launched in November 1993 alongside Sonic CD and Sonic Spinball in Sega's "Sonic Three on One Day" push. Electronic Gaming Monthly named it the Best Game Gear Game of 1993, and it was the top-selling Game Gear game in the US that January. Later critics have been cooler, mostly about how easy it is.

That breezy difficulty is a feature on a handheld. Sonic Chaos is the 8-bit Sonic where speed finally becomes the point rather than the reward, and the game where Tails stepped up as a hero in his own right, a role Aspect carried straight into Sonic Triple Trouble.

About the game

Dr. Robotnik has stolen the Red Chaos Emerald, causing the other five to "lose balance" and scatter themselves into a parallel universe. As a result of the instability, South Island is now sinking into the ocean. It is up to Sonic and Tails to find the Chaos Emeralds and restore harmony to the universe, or else the innocent residents of South Island will find themselves taking a long swim.
