Item Description

In arcades, Sonic Blast Man was a game you played with your fists. Taito's 1990 cabinet had you pull on a pair of gloves and wait for a mechanical punch pad to rise, then hit it as hard as you could to help a caped hero save the day. Turning that into a home game without the hardware meant reinventing it, and the Super Nintendo version, developed by I.T.L for Taito and released in 1992, became a full side-scrolling beat 'em up starring the same square-jawed superhero.

His mission takes him from a construction site all the way to outer space, battling street gangs, terrorists, aliens and robots before facing Heavy Blast Man, an evil clone of himself. The move set is more varied than it first looks. Grab an enemy and the direction you press decides what happens next: shake and throw them, unleash a punch combo, fire off a sonic wave, spin into a whirlwind punch or hurl them over your shoulder. A special attack clears space by knocking back everyone nearby at the cost of leaving him briefly dizzy, and his most powerful move, the D. Punch, has to be charged and released and can only be used a limited number of times.

The bonus stages are where the arcade heritage shows. With no punch pad to hit, you build up strength by rotating the directional pad as fast as you can, a frantic, thumb-burning nod to the cabinet's test-your-strength roots. It is a single-player adventure, and the North American release swapped the Japanese version's female enemies for male ones, a sign of Nintendo of America's content policies at the time.

Sonic Blast Man II later added Sonia and Captain Choyear plus two-player brawling, but the original has a cheerful, offbeat sincerity all its own. It is a slice of early Super Nintendo history straight out of the arcade's punching-machine corner, and a brawler whose hero wears his goofy, earnest heroics on his sleeve.
