Night falls, the fire is dying, and somewhere beyond its light something large is moving through the grass. Song in the Smoke: Rekindled is a primal survival adventure from 17-BIT built for PlayStation VR2, and it is at its best in exactly those moments, when you are crouched by a sputtering campfire, bow in hand, listening to the dark.

You arrive in a wild, dreamlike land armed with nothing, and everything you need you make with your own hands. Hunger and fatigue are tracked on a simple indicator on your left wrist, so you gather, craft, hunt and cook, then build a camp and keep the fire fed so you can sleep safely through the night. Weapons are crude and physical: a club you swing with your own arm, better for fending danger off than winning fights, and a bow you draw and aim yourself, with arrows too precious to leave behind. Every tool wears down, and the tight inventory forces real decisions about what to carry.

The journey unfolds across a handful of zones, and in each you must track down three mysterious Singing Stones, which reveal a spirit beast you have to hunt before you can move on. Predators, a fearsome lion among them, turn preparation into survival, and the sound design, from the chirp of crickets to footsteps you cannot place, does as much to sell the world as the visuals. The Rekindled release makes the most of PS VR2 with redrawn and upscaled textures, haptic feedback, inside-out tracking with full 360-degree movement, smoother stick locomotion with a new free jump, and plenty of comfort settings to suit different players.

Expect around a dozen hours of deliberate, hands-on survival rather than an action rollercoaster. For PS VR2 owners who want something more grounded and atmospheric than a shooter or rhythm game, it is a distinctive and immersive way to spend a few nights in the wild.
