Item Description

Most handheld shooters try to squeeze a console experience onto a smaller screen. SOCOM U.S. Navy SEALs: Tactical Strike went the other way, turning Sony's military shooter series into a real-time tactics game in which your brain matters more than your trigger finger. It was the debut game from Slant Six Games, who later developed SOCOM: Confrontation for the PlayStation 3, and its approach is unlike anything else in the series.

You command a four-man special operations squad, steering it with the analog stick and previewing each soldier's route before committing them to a move. Split the squad into two-man fire teams and you can set up flanks, cover angles and coordinated breaches, viewing the action from individual soldiers' perspectives to plan each step. Before every mission you customize loadouts, spend skill points earned in the field and, when the option is offered, choose your insertion point, so preparation pays off as much as execution.

One of its smartest touches is the choice of unit. At the start of the campaign you pick one of nine special forces groups, among them the U.S. Navy SEALs, the British SAS and the German KSK. The story is the same for each, but the squad speaks in its native language with English subtitles, which gives each playthrough a different flavor. Online multiplayer was part of the original package, though those servers shut down in 2012.

This Greatest Hits edition is Sony's reissue for PSP games that sold well, and Tactical Strike earned that spot by offering something the PSP library has very little of: methodical, squad-based tactics that reward planning and suit the system's pick-up-and-play rhythm. It is the most cerebral game in the SOCOM line.
