Item Description

Mars begins Shining Wisdom on his first day of service in the King's guard at Castle Odegan, which turns out to be a terrible day to start. The Black Elf Pazort is scheming to awaken the Dark Titan, a giant that nearly destroyed the land of Palacia long ago, and the newest guard, son of the legendary warrior Jiles, ends up standing between the world and catastrophe.

Rather than the turn-based tactics the Shining name usually means, this is an overhead action-RPG in the Zelda mold. You explore the countryside, swing your sword in real time, dodge traps and work through dungeons built around puzzles and hidden paths. Special weapons, items and power orbs grant new abilities that open up routes you could not reach earlier, so the world gradually unlocks as Mars grows stronger, and the bosses guarding the deepest dungeons test both reflexes and the tools you have gathered.

It came from Sonic! Software Planning, the Sega team behind Shining Force II, which later became Camelot and went on to Shining Force III and Golden Sun. Shining Wisdom arrived on the Saturn in 1995 in Japan and was later localized by Working Designs. With hand-drawn sprites that look like a lavish 16-bit adventure rather than a 32-bit showcase, it surprised some players at the time, but that classic look is exactly what makes it appealing now to fans of top-down action RPGs.

This is the original Japanese release, the version Sega published for its home market before the English localization. Collectors working through the Shining series will want this detour, and it makes a gentle entry point into Japanese Saturn imports: a modest, cheerful adventure with plenty of dungeon-crawling character.

About the game

Once, long ago, a fearsome giant known as the "Dark Titan" rose from the abyss and nearly destroyed all Palacia before being bound by magic. Now, the Black Elf Pazort is scheming to rule the world by returning the Dark Titan from the depths of the abyss! But, there is hope. Mars, the son of the legendary warrior Jiles, begins his service in the King's guard at castle Odegan this very day. Guide him through the terrifying traps and devious dungeons as you struggle to seal the Four Elementals that can power Pazort's scheme! Your journey will not be easy. The Lily Pads of Sudden Discomfort lie near every watery path. Rainbow Stinger Scorpions block critical junctions. And, Pazort himself waits in the dank depths of the Catacomb Marsh, guarding the rising Titan. To succeed, you must wield special weapons, items, and power orbs with skill never before witnessed in the land. And succeed you must, for failure will result in the end of all mankind, and the loss of that important victory smooch from the princess.
