Item Description

Shellshock has more attitude than any tank game has a right to. Core Design's 1996 hovertank shooter for the Sega Saturn, published by U.S. Gold, casts you as a rookie commando trying to earn a place with Da Wardenz, an anti-terrorist tank crew formed by five soldiers who survived after their own government left them for dead in a disastrous 1994 campaign at Mostvia Vatska. They are out for justice, they have a hip-hop soundtrack to match, and they are not impressed with you yet.

Your ride is the M-13 Predator, a battle tank that rolls through forests and enemy emplacements across 3D battlefields as you hunt down terrorist forces mission by mission. Between sorties you return to The Pen, Da Wardenz headquarters, a hub with a main hangar, a workshop, a briefing area, a simulation room, lockers and even a basketball court. It is a surprisingly personal touch for a mid-90s shooter, and it gives the campaign a sense of belonging to a crew. Along the way you can upgrade the Predator's armaments and shielding, so the tank you finish with is far more capable than the one you start in.

The game also catches Core Design at an interesting moment. The Derby studio had already made a name on Sega hardware, and later that same year it would release Tomb Raider and become famous overnight. Shellshock is part of the less-remembered stretch just before that, a confident, slightly brash action game that leans hard into its style.

For Saturn owners it is a refreshing break from the console's fighters and racers, and a loose disc is an easy way to put that 1996 swagger back on original hardware. Few games of the era committed this fully to a vibe, and that commitment is the reason to play it.

About the game

Having served in combat for the United States, Da Wardenz are out for one thing -- justice. This anti-terrorist tank force was conceived after an ill-fated campaign at Mostvia Vatska in 1994. Coming under heavy fire, the troops sent a distress signal to the U.S. Intelligence requesting immediate backup. The government turned their backs on the Special Forces unit by making them expendable and refusing to send in backup. As a result, five men survived; those five men formed Da Wardenz. Here's where you come into play. Assuming the role of a rookie commando, your mission is simple: prove yourself to Da Wardenz by destroying terrorist forces and rectifying global corruption. Easy, huh? That's not all -- you'll be in command of an M-13 Predator battle tank; this thing can mow down forests and calm any terrorist dispute. Along the way, you can upgrade your tank in armaments and shielding. Shellshock is broken into two parts: The Pen and actual mission objectives. As Da Wardenz headquarters, The Pen has all sorts of locations including the main hangar, basketball court, simulation room, workshop area, briefing area, and various lockers.
