The photos are of this exact cartridge — look them over closely for its condition, packaging and details. Item Description

Steve Hermann was a Bronx cop until he lost both arms. Now he punches through cyborg soldiers with a pair of cybernetic fists, and Shatterhand turns that premise into one of the most satisfying action games of the NES's final years. Developed by Natsume and published in North America by Jaleco in 1991, it pits Steve against Metal Command, a renegade military force led by General Gus Grover, and lets him fight the whole army bare-knuckle.

The hook is the satellite robot system. Defeated enemies and smashed containers drop chips marked with the Greek letters alpha and beta, and collecting any three summons a small robot companion that hovers at your side. The order of the letters decides which of eight robots you get, from one that fires lasers to one that swings a sword, and if you collect the same combination twice while your robot is still active, Steve merges with it into a powered-up form for a limited time. Punch a chip to change its letter, but punch it too often and it turns into a coin, and coins buy health, attack power and extra lives at shop platforms. Building the right robot for each area becomes a strategy of its own.

After an introductory stage, five areas can be tackled in any order, with a final area unlocking once they are cleared. The sprites are big and detailed, the levels are packed with machinery and moving parts, and the soundtrack by Iku Mizutani and Hiroyuki Iwatsuki is a high point of Natsume's NES work. In Japan, the game was Tokkyū Shirei Solbrain, a licensed adaptation of a live-action superhero show; the Western version reworked the characters and opening and replaced a carnival stage with a nuclear submarine.

Shatterhand arrived late in the NES's life, after the spotlight had moved toward the 16-bit consoles, which is why many players missed it the first time. It sits comfortably beside Natsume's Shadow of the Ninja as a late-era gem, and for fans of Mega Man, Ninja Gaiden and tight, hard-hitting action, it rewards every hour you put into it.

About the game

Imagine packing the power of 100 strategic missiles in every punch. Imagine needing every single megaton just to hold your own against a cybernetic army of metallic monstrosities. That's the guts of Shatterhand, the game that redefines hand-to-hand combat in the 21st century... along with all the standards for single-player action games for the NES. Seven levels of programmed adventure - you choose the action! State-of-the-art graphics featuring 8-direction scrolling! "Anti-gravity" levels force you to fight upside-down! Armed "satellite robots" assist you in battle. No arms on Earth can withstand the power in your hands! This port is a localized version with differences such as different graphics for characters and items, different story and opening, and the most substantial change is Area C which is a carnival stage in the original but here it was replaced with a nuclear-submarine stage.
