Item Condition

Game only: the cartridge in a protective holder, no box or manual. Look over the photos for condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

A layered pile of mahjong tiles and one simple rule: match two identical free tiles and remove them from the board. A tile is only free if nothing is stacked on it and its left or right side is open, and that small restriction is the whole game. Clear everything and you win; pull the wrong pair early and you may bury the very tile you need, leaving yourself stuck with no legal moves.

Shanghai is where this style of mahjong solitaire found its audience. Brodie Lockard first developed the idea on the PLATO computer system, and Activision published Shanghai for home computers in 1986, where it became a hit and sold more than half a million copies within a few years. Its success spread the game to nearly every platform of the era, and HAL Laboratory brought it to the Game Boy.

The handheld suits it well. There are no reflexes involved, just pattern recognition and planning: scanning the stack for pairs among the characters, bamboo, circles, winds and dragons, deciding which match opens up the most of the layout, and slowly peeling the pile down. It is the kind of puzzle you can pick up for a few minutes and put down mid-game, which made it a natural companion to Tetris on Nintendo's early handheld.

It also has a neat place in HAL Laboratory's history, released on the Game Boy just a few years before the same studio created Kirby's Dream Land. For players who like slow, thoughtful puzzles over twitchy action, this is mahjong solitaire in the compact, quietly addictive form that made it a fixture of computers and handhelds alike.
