Item Description

Welcome to the tunnels, Dogmeat. Sewer Shark drops you into the pilot's seat of an exterminator craft screaming through the flooded sewers beneath a ruined future city, where your job is to blast the mutant vermin that live down there and keep your hopper in one piece. Do it well enough and the reward is the dream of every sewer jockey: a one-way ticket to Solar City and its sunny beaches.

The action is pure rail shooter. You sweep a crosshair across live-action footage, picking off ratigators and the other horrors that lunge out of the dark, while a constant stream of directions crackles over the radio. Miss a turn at a junction and you are lost in the pipes. All the while a cast of live actors heckles, encourages and threatens you, and the hammy performances and sneering superiors are a huge part of the charm.

The game's history is as wild as its premise. Sewer Shark was conceived for a video-based home console that Hasbro developed and then shelved before it ever reached shelves, and Digital Pictures carried the footage over to the Sega CD, where it became one of the system's first releases. It was later packed in with Sega CD hardware, which is why so many players met the add-on through this exact game, and why Not for Resale copies exist at all.

Sewer Shark is the purest snapshot of the moment when video on a disc seemed like the future of games: grainy footage, live actors and split-second choices, all in the name of something no cartridge could do. It is campy, loud and cheerfully over the top, and for anyone collecting Sega CD and Digital Pictures history, it is where the Sega CD's full-motion video era takes off.

About the game

Sewer Shark is an FMV-based shooter, and one of the first games released for the Sega CD. You move a crosshair around the screen and shoot targets. Occasionally, you can also choose to change directions at fixed points. Of course the real attraction in a game like this is the story. In the future, maybe in the year 2000, people will be forced to move underground and live in tunnels. Unfortunately, these tunnels are infested with mutated rat / alligator creatures known as "ratigators." You are pilot of a Sewer Shark, a craft designed to navigate the Sewers and rid them of ratigators. It's a dangerous job, but if you clear out enough vermin you can win a one-way trip to Solar City and sunny beaches.
