Everyone who grew up sharing a TV for split-screen multiplayer knows the move: a quick glance at a friend's corner of the screen to see where they are hiding. Screencheat takes that playground crime and makes it the entire game. Every player is invisible, so the only way to find an opponent is to look at their view, read the color of the walls around them and the landmarks in sight, and work out exactly where on the map they must be standing.
Samurai Punk, a small Melbourne studio, designed its ten maps around that idea. Each area is painted in its own bold color and dotted with landmarks such as elevators and jump pads, so learning a map means learning to turn a half-second glimpse into a location. The arsenal leans into the silliness, from blunderbusses and rifles to a candelabra, a hobby horse and a remote bear bomb, and nine modes twist the formula in different directions. Deathmatch and One Shot are pure tests of how fast you can read a screen, Hill Campers is its take on king of the hill, Capture the Fun gives objective play a ridiculous twist, and Murder Mystery adds a Cluedo-style layer of deduction to the shooting. Mutators and custom rules stretch every mode further.
The game tips its hat to the couch shooters that raised a generation, GoldenEye, Perfect Dark and Halo among them, while playing nothing like any of them. There is no story campaign here, and the AI could never cheat the way a human does, so this is a game for a room full of people. Local matches can stretch to as many as eight players, and reviewers agreed it hits its peak with four friends on one couch, trash talk included.
On PS4, Screencheat turns the oldest unwritten rule of split-screen into its only rule: look at their screen, or lose. It is a clever, compact party game built on an idea nobody else had the nerve to make official.
Screencheat is a chaotic split-screen multiplayer shooter that forces players to rethink the way they approach conventional multiplayer games. In the Screencheat arena, fast reaction times aren’t enough to keep you alive. When everyone is invisible, players will have to master the art of taking a not-so sneaky look at their opponent’s screens and working out where they are based on uniquely coloured areas of the map and distinctive landmarks. Screencheat pays homage to iconic competitive first-person shooters such as Goldeneye, Perfect Dark and Halo, by blending the elements everyone loves about those games and shaking it up with its own unique take on the genre. When everyone’s used to playing by the rules, can you adapt to unconventional gaming quick enough to get the upper hand?
