Item Condition

Game only: the cartridge in a protective holder, no box or manual. The photos are of this exact copy — look them over closely for its condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

“Let the carnage begin!” Few voices are welded to a 16-bit game as firmly as Larry “Supermouth” Huffman’s, and in Rock n’ Roll Racing he is bellowing over chiptune arrangements of “Paranoid,” “Born to Be Wild” and “Bad to the Bone” while four armored cars try to blow each other off the track. Developed by Silicon & Synapse, the studio that would soon become Blizzard Entertainment, it is a combat racer with a personality the size of an arena tour.

Races run four laps around tracks viewed from an isometric angle, full of slopes, ramps and guardrails that punish sloppy driving and reward smart lines. Every car is armed, with forward weapons, something nasty to drop behind you and a nitro boost, and races are as much about clearing the road as winning it. Prize money from good finishes goes toward new engines, tires, shocks and armor, or an entirely new ride such as the Marauder, the Havoc or the Air Blade, which gives a racing game the kind of upgrade loop usually found in RPGs.

The drivers are a cast of interplanetary misfits competing across a string of hostile alien worlds, and two players can share a split screen to tear through the championship together. Sharp-eyed players also know about the hidden driver Olaf, borrowed straight from Silicon & Synapse’s own The Lost Vikings, one of the earliest examples of the studio slipping its characters into each other’s games.

Rock n’ Roll Racing sits right at the start of Blizzard’s story alongside The Lost Vikings, and its mix of heavy metal, heavy armor and nonstop trash talk shaped a lot of people’s idea of what a racing game could be. It came back to modern platforms decades later in the Blizzard Arcade Collection, but the Super Nintendo cartridge is where the attitude was born, with an announcer who never runs out of things to yell.

About the game

The game pits four racers against each other, with up to two of them being player-controlled and the rest being AI opponents. Each race consists of four laps around tracks viewed from an isometric perspective, which enables players to discern the presence of frequent sloping sections spread throughout the game's various tracks. In addition to navigating the turns, racers must also maneuver hills and dips without falling or jumping over the guard rail at the track's edge.
