Rock Band 2 is the sequel that turned Harmonix's living-room phenomenon into a full music library. Arriving in 2008, a year after the original, it went head to head with Guitar Hero: World Tour carrying more than 80 songs on the disc, all drawn from the original master recordings, and a take on band play that felt like the first game's ideas polished to a shine. Guitar, bass, drums and vocals still come together as one band, and the thrill of four friends locking into a song is exactly what it was in 2007, just with a deeper setlist and far fewer rough edges.

And what a setlist. Bon Jovi's "Livin' on a Prayer" is an instant party starter, Rage Against the Machine's "Testify" and Metallica's "Battery" put drummers through their paces, Nirvana's "Drain You" and Judas Priest's "Painkiller" test every guitarist's left hand, and Bob Dylan's "Tangled Up in Blue" hands the singer a very different kind of spotlight. Guns N' Roses even premiered "Shackler's Revenge" here, ahead of the long-delayed Chinese Democracy album. The list spans decades and genres while still finding room for the deeper cuts that made scrolling through a Rock Band setlist half the fun.

The design learned a lot from the first game. A dedicated Drum Trainer helps beginners build real rhythm with practice beats and fills, No Fail mode keeps nervous friends from dragging the band down, and the expanded World Tour can be played solo or with a full band as you climb toward bigger venues. Battle of the Bands was designed around online competition and rotating challenges at launch. Rock Band 2 also accepted the original game's instruments, and many players treated it as the hub for their growing downloadable song collection, with first-game tracks able to be brought over as well.

The game is designed around Rock Band's instrument controllers, guitar, drums and microphone, and on the Xbox 360 it sits at the heart of the console's rhythm-game heyday, when a plastic drum kit in the corner meant friends were coming over on Friday night. Ask longtime players which disc captured the series at the peak of its setlist and polish, and this is the one many will name.

About the game

Rock Band 2 is the sequel to the 2007 musical simulation game Rock Band and offers similar gameplay. Directly competing with Guitar Hero: World Tour, the game allows different people to play together as in a band, with the same peripherals as the first game: lead guitar, bass guitar, microphone and a drum set. The new drum and guitar controllers for this version, bundled or sold separately, have been revised and older controllers are also supported. The guitar controller, modelled after the Fender Stratocaster, has five additional fret buttons near the neck, for fast fingertapping sessions. There is also an effect switch to toggle between five different effects. Players use the instruments to match notes on the screen, divided in different portions for different instruments, along with the lyrics for the singer who need to match the pitch.
