Item Condition

Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. The photos are of this exact copy — look them over closely for its condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

“BARF!” No NES game announces a knockout quite like River City Ransom, and that cry from a flattened gang member is the first sign that this is no ordinary brawler. Alex and Ryan set out across River City to reach River City High and rescue Ryan's girlfriend Cyndi from a villain called Slick, and instead of marching them down a single street, Technos Japan opened up the whole town. You choose where to go, which fights to pick and how to spend your money, and the beat-'em-up turns into something much closer to an action RPG.

That RPG side is the hook. Defeated gang members drop cash, and the city's shopping malls are full of ways to spend it: food and spa treatments restore your fighters and can permanently raise stats such as Punch and Kick, while bookstores sell fighting techniques like Grand Slam, Stone Hands and Dragon Feet. Rivals belong to gangs with names like the Generic Dudes, the Frat Guys, the Jocks and the Squids, each recognizable by shirt color and each with its own attack patterns, and their leaders act as bosses barring the way. Brass knuckles, chains, steel pipes and trash cans lie around to be swung or thrown, and a password records your stats, skills, possessions, money and defeated bosses.

Best of all, a friend can take control of Ryan and fight alongside you through the entire city at the same time, which turns every alleyway scrap into a two-player brawl. Only two buttons are used, yet between punches, kicks, throws, blocks and the special techniques you buy, the move set keeps growing, and fights stay quick enough that wandering the city never turns into a grind. The humor runs throughout, right down to the sight of your fighter relaxing in the sauna.

In Japan the game is Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari, part of Technos's Kunio-kun series that also gave the NES Renegade and Super Dodge Ball, and it was the first console game published by the company's North American arm, American Technos. It was not a big seller outside Japan at first, but its open-ended design and humor built a devoted cult following that carried the series forward through remakes such as River City Ransom EX on Game Boy Advance and, decades later, River City Girls. With a friend on the second controller, the NES original is still the purest form of a formula later games keep returning to.
