Ristar is one of those games that never quite got the spotlight it deserved. It debuted on the Genesis in early 1995 as a showcase of what Sega's 16-bit talent could do, made by a team many of whom went on to create Nights into Dreams, and the Game Gear version brought its inventive platforming to a handheld audience the same year. The star-shaped hero at the center of it all may look cute, but his task is a big one: freeing the planets of the Valdi system from the space pirate Kaiser Greedy, who has brainwashed their leaders.
What sets Ristar apart from other platformers of the era is its grabbing mechanic. Rather than jumping on enemies or shooting projectiles, Ristar stretches his arms out to latch onto objects, enemies and anchors, using that grip to swing from poles and star handles, headbutt foes and propel himself through colorful, imaginatively designed stages. It is a concept that feels surprisingly fresh even decades later, and on a handheld that tactile reach-and-grab rhythm translates beautifully into quick, satisfying sessions.
The Game Gear version is more than a scaled-down port. Its remixed levels, original stages and different gameplay mechanics give it an identity of its own, and it was clearly made with care rather than dashed out to fill a catalog slot. The visuals are crisp and expressive for a handheld of the era, the music carries the upbeat, melodic quality Sega's sound designers were known for, and the stage variety keeps things interesting from start to finish.
Ristar has quietly grown into one of the more respected cult classics of the 16-bit era. It never spawned a sequel; designer Akira Nishino said in 2006 that a sequel got as far as a character design before it fell through, and that singularity has only added to its mystique. Sega has reissued the Genesis original many times over the years, introducing new generations to the character, while this Game Gear version remains its own distinct take on the adventure.
