Item Description
Every pinball machine has a drain. This one has teeth. HAL Laboratory's Revenge of the 'Gator turns the space between your flippers into the jaws of a grinning alligator, and the whole table is overrun with his relatives. Released in 1989, in the Game Boy's first year, it proved early that the little handheld could handle pinball, and it still has more personality than most games from the system's first wave. In Japan it was called Pinball: 66 Hiki no Wani Daikoushin, roughly "the great march of 66 alligators," which tells you exactly what kind of game it is.
The table is one very tall playfield split across several screens, with the view flashing to the next section as the ball travels up or down, so a good shot sends you climbing toward the top and a bad bounce sends you tumbling back toward those jaws. Special holes drop the ball into bonus screens built around the gators: bonking a row of alligator heads, hatching and attacking baby gators, and cracking open Breakout-style eggs to get at a big alligator for extra points. It all comes down to flipper timing and knowing where the ball is headed.
Two players can alternate turns, and with a link cable there is Match Play, a split-screen duel where each player tries to drain the other's score to zero while letter orbs change the ball's weight, take away flippers or add ball savers. HAL would go on to make Kirby's Pinball Land, and this is where the studio's handheld pinball lineage began.
