Item Description

It starts with a train full of dead passengers. On a rainy night in the Arklay Mountains, S.T.A.R.S. Bravo Team medic Rebecca Chambers boards the stalled Ecliptic Express and finds it overrun with zombies, leeches and worse. Resident Evil Zero, Capcom's 2002 GameCube prequel, fills in the hours just before the original game's mansion incident, and it is one of the moodiest entries the classic series ever produced.

The twist is that Rebecca is not alone. Billy Coen, a former Marine lieutenant being transported for execution after a murder conviction, escaped when his prison transport crashed, and the two are forced into an uneasy partnership. The partner zapping system lets you switch between them at any moment or split them up entirely. Billy is tougher in a fight and handles the heavy lifting, while Rebecca is the one who can mix herbs and chemicals, and many puzzles require both of them working in different rooms and passing items back and forth. The series' traditional item boxes are gone too: anything you can't carry gets dropped on the floor and has to be remembered and retrieved later, which turns inventory management into real planning.

After the train, the story moves to an abandoned Umbrella training facility with a dark history tied to company co-founder James Marcus. The prerendered backgrounds, built on the same approach as Capcom's GameCube remake of the original Resident Evil, still look striking: rain streaking down train windows, flickering candlelight, ornate halls lined with portraits. New threats like the giant scorpion aboard the Ecliptic Express and swarms of leeches that gather into human shapes make it feel distinct from the games around it, and Albert Wesker and William Birkin appear in scenes that set up events fans already know. Clearing the game unlocks Leech Hunter, a bonus mode that sends you back through the facility collecting leech charms.

Zero began life as a Nintendo 64 project before moving to the GameCube, and its original release paired perfectly with that remake on the same console. Played together, the two give you a complete GameCube telling of where the Resident Evil saga began, with Rebecca and Billy's long night ending just as the mansion nightmare is about to start.

About the game

Resident Evil Zero is a third-person survival horror video game and a prequel to the first Resident Evil. The gameplay remains largely the same as previous entries in the series but also introduces what it calls a partner zapping system, which allows you to switch between the two characters Rebecca and Billy at any time. This feature must be used at times, as the game requires both characters to work together to solve some puzzles. New to the game are a bunch of terrifying enemies, like the mutant centipede, new areas to explore, and the ability to drop items on the ground instead of having to find an item box.
