Item Description
A searchlight sweeps the street, and your sniper has seconds to roll into a doorway before it finds him. Rescue: The Embassy Mission is a slow-burn hostage-rescue thriller from Infogrames, adapted for the NES from the computer game Hostages and published in 1989, and it plays like nothing else in the console's action library.
You command a six-man counter-terrorist team: three snipers and three assault operatives. The mission unfolds in distinct phases. First, each sniper has to cross the streets around the embassy to a firing post, crawling, rolling and ducking for cover as the searchlights pass. Once in position, the view switches to a rifle scope, and every terrorist you pick off at the windows is one fewer waiting inside. Then a helicopter drops the assault team on the roof, and each operative rappels down the face of the building to a window on one of three floors, a nerve-racking sequence where descending carelessly can be fatal and a terrorist at the glass can end the descent unless a sniper deals with him first.
Inside, the game moves through the eyes of your operatives as they clear the floors room by room with a mini-map to guide them. The hostages are in there with the terrorists, and a careless shot can hit the wrong person. Multiple difficulty settings let the same embassy be replayed as a far tenser mission, and the debrief at the end shows exactly how well the operation went.
It rewards patience, planning and steady hands far more than reflexes, and that makes it a fascinating outlier on the NES. For players who enjoy tactical games, European computer-game history or the deeper corners of the library, it is a rewarding discovery that still feels unusual today.
