Item Description

Most shooters treat walls as scenery. Red Faction: Armageddon treats them as ammunition. Volition's 2011 sequel to Red Faction: Guerrilla picks up fifty years after Alec Mason's uprising, on a Mars where the destruction of the Terraformer has made the surface uninhabitable and driven the colonists into Bastion and the tunnel networks beneath the red dust. Alec's grandson Darius is a miner for hire who gets tricked into reopening a sealed shaft inside an ancient Marauder temple, and what pours out is an alien swarm that turns the underground into a battlefield and puts the Mason name back at the center of the planet's fate.

The Geo-Mod 2.0 engine is the reason to play. Catwalks, support pillars, buildings and cultist fortifications come apart piece by piece, and the arsenal is built to exploit that. The Magnet Gun is the headline act: tag one object, tag a second, and the first rockets into the other, so a slab of concrete becomes a projectile or an entire structure gets yanked down onto the creatures nesting beneath it. The Nano Forge, the alien device Darius carries through the campaign, lets him rebuild the stairways, bridges and cover he has just reduced to rubble, which turns all that demolition into a way of solving problems as much as causing them. Stretches piloting walkers and the LEO exo suit change the pace with heavy, stomping firepower.

The campaign is more focused than Guerrilla's open world, moving through collapsing caverns, Marauder ruins and battered colonist settlements before pushing Darius back toward the surface, and that tighter structure gives the set pieces room to escalate. Away from the story, Infestation mode pits up to four players against escalating waves of attackers, a co-op survival mode designed around teammates holding ground together online. Reviews were more mixed than Guerrilla's, with some players missing the open sandbox, but the destruction technology won steady praise.

Armageddon is also where the Red Faction story stops. No mainline sequel followed after THQ's collapse, which makes it the final chapter of Volition's Mars saga and the conclusion of three generations of the Mason family's fight. On the Xbox 360 it is a loud, physical, very particular kind of shooter, the kind where the most satisfying kill of the night comes from never aiming at the enemy at all, only at the ceiling above it.
