Item Description

There is something wonderfully odd about a Seibu Kaihatsu arcade shooter being brought home by Toei Animation, the studio better known for anime than for cartridges. That is the story of Raiden Densetsu, "the Raiden Legend," the Japanese Super Famicom release of the shooter that English-speaking players met as Raiden Trad. Seibu's 1990 original was a smash in arcades, a no-nonsense vertical shooter whose screen-filling bombs and dense enemy fire set the tone for a series that later grew into Raiden II and the Raiden Fighters games, and this cartridge was the only Raiden ever released for the system.

The basics are pure Raiden. You fly over farmland and towns before the campaign heads into space, picking up power-ups that build the Vulcan into a wide spread shot or the blue laser into a focused beam, adding homing missiles, and banking bombs that wipe the screen of bullets in a pinch. Medals scattered through each stage feed your score, and a short cut-scene of your fighter docking with its base and launching into orbit marks the move into the space stages. Finish the last stage and the game loops back to the start with tougher enemy fire.

The headline feature is simultaneous two-player co-op, which turns the screen into a storm of friendly fire and reviewers agree it is where this version is at its most fun. Five difficulty settings let you tune the challenge, and the playfield fills the full screen rather than the narrowed window of the Mega Drive conversion.

Critics at the time were clear that this is a looser, simpler take on the arcade game, with shorter stages and fewer background details, so it is best enjoyed as a breezy, blast-everything co-op shooter and an early-days Super Famicom curiosity. Chasing Raiden across every platform it touched, or building a run of Japanese shooters on original hardware? The Raiden Densetsu label is the piece that covers Nintendo's 16-bit machine.

About the game

Raiden consists of eight vertical scrolling missions where the player maneuvers the Raiden craft dodging and destroying enemy robots, buildings, ground targets, and aircraft. There are bombs and missile powerups as well as collectable medals which add to the score. When player dies, the fighter's fragments become projectiles that damage enemies. After defeating the Stage 8 boss, the mission is completed, and player receives 1 million points for each completed loop. Afterwards, it will start back to Stage 1. This time around, enemies shoot faster and at a more rapid rate.
