Item Description

Hop, land, change the color, repeat, and try not to jump off the edge of the world. Q*bert drops its orange, big-nosed hero at the top of a pyramid of cubes and asks him to turn every top to the target color, one diagonal leap at a time. It sounds simple until the red balls start bouncing down, a purple ball hatches into Coily the snake and Sam, the green troublemaker, starts hopping behind you and undoing your work.

Gottlieb's 1982 arcade original, designed by Warren Davis and Jeff Lee, was unlike anything else in the arcade. The isometric pyramid gave it a three-dimensional look, and Q*bert's habit of cursing in a cartoon speech bubble whenever he was caught gave the character a mischievous personality that made him one of the era's breakout stars, complete with merchandise and his own segment on Saturday Supercade. Few arcade heroes have had a sillier, more lovable design.

Parker Brothers published the Atari 5200 version in 1983, and it captures the look and feel of the arcade game, pyramid and all. The spinning discs on either side of the pyramid are still your escape hatch, carrying Q*bert back to the top, and the best trick in the game still works: lure Coily to the edge, ride a disc away and watch the snake follow you right off the side. The 5200 version can get busy, with plenty of enemies bouncing around at once, and later rounds demand several hops per cube or flip colors back if you land too often. Hopping is done by holding the fire button and pushing in a direction, which takes a few games to get comfortable with.

Q*bert's cursing hero never stopped being recognizable, and on the 5200 it is a faithful, challenging version of a puzzle-platformer that still feels unlike anything else from its time.

About the game

Q*bert is an isometric platform game with puzzle elements where the player controls the titular protagonist from a third-person perspective. Q*bert starts each game at the top of a pyramid of cubes, and moves by jumping diagonally from cube to cube. Landing on a cube causes it to change color, and changing every cube to the target color allows the player to progress to the next stage.
