Item Description
Pygmy Hippo is the strangest kind of mana thief. When this green-blue 2/2 attacks and isn't blocked, you may have the defending player activate a mana ability of each land they control and lose all that unspent mana. If you do, the Hippo deals no combat damage, and at the beginning of your next main phase that turn you add colorless mana equal to what they lost.
In practice, a successful attack taps your opponent's lands and hands you their mana for your postcombat main phase. That can mean casting something far bigger than your own lands allow, while the opponent has no untapped mana left to answer it on your turn. It's a puzzle-box card from an era when Magic's designers loved to experiment, and pulling it off feels like a heist.
Visions arrived in 1997 as the second set of the Mirage block, and its gold cards carry plenty of that era's personality. This is the Visions printing, collector number 133, a rare illustrated by Steve White and offered here in non-foil. Hippos are a rare creature type in Magic, which makes this one a fun anchor for a casual green-blue theme deck.
