Item Description

Fall off a ledge in this Prince of Persia and a hand reaches out to catch you. That hand belongs to Elika, a princess with mysterious powers, and her presence redefines the whole adventure. Ubisoft Montreal's 2008 reboot left the Sands of Time trilogy behind for a new, unnamed hero, a wisecracking wanderer voiced by Nolan North who stumbles out of a sandstorm and into a land on the verge of being swallowed by darkness.

Elika's father, the Mourning King, has broken the seal on the Tree of Life and freed the dark god Ahriman, and his Corruption is spreading across the kingdom. The structure is unusually open for the series: you choose which region to tackle next, defeat the Corrupted guardian holding it, then have Elika heal the Fertile Ground, which washes color back into the world and scatters Light Seeds to collect. Gathering enough seeds unlocks Elika's powers and the colored Power Plates of Ormazd, magical launch points that fling the pair across chasms, up cliffs and along new routes through areas you have already explored.

The acrobatics flow beautifully, building on the series' wall-running with ceiling crawls, ring swings and long rhythmic chains of jumps that feel more like a dance than a puzzle. Combat is a series of one-on-one duels with Corrupted bosses such as the Hunter, the Alchemist, the Warrior and the Concubine, where sword strikes, gauntlet grabs, acrobatics and Elika's magic chain into long combos. The cel-shaded art, all painterly skies and ink-like outlines, makes it one of the most striking games of its generation.

Its forgiving design divided players at launch, since Elika's rescues mean there is no traditional game over, but that choice is what lets the game focus on traversal and on two characters who bicker their way into real affection. The ending is bold, bittersweet and still argued about, and because Ubisoft never made a direct sequel, this reboot stands alone as a single, complete vision of what Prince of Persia could become.
