Sixty minutes. That is all the time the prince has to climb out of the Sultan's dungeons, cross a palace full of traps and guards, and reach the princess before the treacherous Grand Vizier Jaffar forces her hand. Jordan Mechner's Prince of Persia turned that ticking clock into one of the most tense and cinematic games of its era, and this Sega CD version gives the classic a CD-era presentation.

What made Mechner's 1989 original famous was movement. He rotoscoped the prince's animation from video footage of his younger brother, and the result is a hero who runs, skids to a stop, leaps across chasms and hauls himself up onto ledges with a weight and fluidity nothing else in 1989 could match. That realism is also the challenge: every running jump has to be judged to the step, loose floor tiles crumble away underfoot, spikes spring from the stones and slicing blade traps guard the narrow corridors. Potions restore health or extend it, while others are best left untouched.

Swordplay is just as deliberate. Duels with Jaffar's guards are tight exchanges of thrusts, parries and careful footwork rather than button mashing, and Mechner's design is famous for its surprises, from a skeleton that rises to fight to a mirror that splits the prince from his own shadow. The CD release surrounds that tightly built core with a redrawn look, animated story scenes and a soundtrack that takes full advantage of the format.

Prince of Persia went on to become a multimedia franchise spanning decades, from 3D sequels to The Sands of Time and beyond, but it all comes back to this escape against the clock. The Sega CD version is the most elaborate way to play it on Sega hardware, and still a pure test of patience and precision that few platformers since have matched.
