Item Description

The story behind Popeye is almost as famous as the game. Nintendo originally set out to build an arcade game around the spinach-powered sailor, and when the license did not come together, the design team created Donkey Kong instead. Once the rights came through, Nintendo finally made its Popeye game in 1982, and it plays like a cousin of its famous predecessor: platforms, ladders and a big bruiser determined to ruin your day.

Olive Oyl stands at the top of the screen tossing down tokens of affection, and Popeye has to catch them before they are lost. The first screen rains hearts, the second musical notes and the third the letters of a cry for help, each with its own layout and its own musical theme. Brutus stalks you through every level, bottles and birds fly at you from the side, and your only way to take on Brutus is the single can of spinach in each screen. Grab it and the whole dynamic flips for a few glorious seconds as Popeye sends Brutus flying.

Parker Brothers brought the game to the Atari 5200 in late 1983 as part of a wave of home versions, and critics of the day were kind to those conversions; Computer Games magazine called Popeye a “terrific cartoony climbing game, much better than Donkey Kong.” The bright King Features cast looks right at home on the 5200.

Popeye is a fascinating piece of Nintendo history, the game that was meant to come before Donkey Kong, and on the 5200 it is a colorful, approachable platformer with a big dose of cartoon nostalgia for a generation that grew up with the sailor man.

About the game

Popeye is a conversion of the arcade action/platform game. As Popeye, you are trying to win Olive Oyl's love! She is at the top of the screen dropping tokens of her love, and you need to collect them before they hit the ground. After you have collected the required number of items, you can move on to the next, more difficult level. There are many obstacles trying to stop you from completing your task, though! Brutus wanders around the screen and is constantly trying to catch you. If you collect a can of spinach, you can temporarily knock him out, otherwise Brutus will knock you out. Other objects such as bottles or birds are also flying around the screen and will cause you to lose one of your lives if you are hit. Each level features a different layout of platforms and ladders, and will have you collecting different items as they float towards the bottom of the screen!
