Pokkén Tournament arrived on the Wii U in 2016 as something genuinely unexpected: a full-on fighting game set in the Pokémon universe, made by Bandai Namco with Tekken series producer Katsuhiro Harada. It first appeared in Japanese arcades in 2015, and the Wii U release in March 2016 was its home console debut. The result felt unlike anything else in the Pokémon library, a hard-hitting brawler in which Pokémon do not trade turns but throw punches, launch energy blasts and clash in spectacular moments. For fans who had always imagined controlling Charizard in a one-on-one fight, this was the answer.
The Wii U roster brings together 16 fighters, fan favorites and unexpected standouts alike: Pikachu, Lucario, Gengar, Blaziken, Machamp, Charizard, Garchomp, Gardevoir, Weavile, Suicune, Sceptile, Chandelure, Braixen and the luchador-styled Pikachu Libre, with Mewtwo and Shadow Mewtwo to unlock. Each has a distinct fighting style and move set. Battles shift between two phases: a 3D Field Phase where you move freely around a circular arena, and a 2D Duel Phase where precision and timing take center stage, much as in a traditional one-on-one fighter.
Two Support Pokémon can be called in for buffs or attacks, and a filling Synergy Gauge triggers a Synergy Burst that boosts attack and defense, brings out Mega Evolutions and opens a one-use Burst Attack. That layered system gives Pokkén surprising depth, rewarding casual players and serious competitors studying match-ups alike. Clearing the Chroma League permanently unlocks Shadow Mewtwo, and Mewtwo joins after you clear the Red League and defeat Shadow Mewtwo. The game was later expanded as Pokkén Tournament DX on Nintendo Switch in 2017, which makes the Wii U release the original home version of the game.
