Somewhere beneath the churning waters of the Whirl Islands, Lugia is waiting. The guardian of the seas on the box of Pokémon Silver gives this version a slightly mysterious, melancholy mood that sets it apart from the fiery Ho-Oh of its partner, Pokémon Gold, and it sits at the center of a sequel that changed what Pokémon could be.
The Johto region feels alive in a way that was new in 2000. Silver's real-time internal clock drives a day-and-night cycle, so certain Pokémon only appear at night and others only in the morning, and the world responds to what time it actually is when you switch on your Game Boy. It sounds simple now, but it was the kind of design decision that sent kids home after school specifically to catch what was waiting in the dark. Around it came 100 brand-new Pokémon, the Steel and Dark types, held items, breeding at the Day-Care, and a Pokégear that rings with calls from trainers looking for a rematch. Johto's eight Gyms carry you from Falkner's birds in Violet City to Clair's dragons in Blackthorn, by way of Ecruteak's ghosts and the lighthouse town of Olivine.
Silver has its own exclusive catches as well, including Skarmory and Phanpy, and the roaming legendary beasts Raikou, Entei and Suicune keep you checking routes long after you first spot them. Then comes the post-game, still a high-water mark for the series: once you are Champion of Johto, the whole Kanto region from Red and Blue opens up, eight more Gym Leaders stand between you and sixteen badges, and the trail ends on Mt. Silver in a silent showdown with Red himself.
Gold and Silver became the best-selling games on the Game Boy Color, with Silver edging out Gold by roughly 100,000 copies. Its blues and silvers give Johto's towns and coastlines a cool, wistful character all their own, which makes it the natural pick if the call of the ocean was always louder than the tower.
