Item Description

What happens when Pikachu meets Oda Nobunaga? Pokémon Conquest answers with a crossover nobody saw coming, fusing Pokémon with Koei Tecmo's long-running Nobunaga's Ambition strategy series. Set in the Ransei region, it divides the land into 17 kingdoms, each tied to a Pokémon type and ruled by warlords drawn from Japan's Sengoku era. Legend says whoever unites all 17 will meet Arceus, the Pokémon said to have created Ransei, and Nobunaga intends to get there first.

You start small, as the young warlord of the Aurora kingdom with an Eevee at your side, when a warrior named Oichi brings word of Nobunaga's plans. From there the campaign becomes a satisfying loop of conquest: march on a neighboring kingdom, win the castle battle, recruit the warriors you defeat, and build an army that can take on the next type-themed stronghold. Battles play out as turn-based tactics on grid maps, where positioning, terrain and type matchups decide far more than raw strength, and each kingdom's battlefield has its own layout to master.

The clever part is the Link system, which replaces traditional leveling. Every warrior has a link percentage with each Pokémon they partner with, warriors favor certain types, and each one has a single evolutionary family that can reach a perfect 100 percent link. Finding those perfect pairings becomes a game in itself, and some warlords can even link with legendary Pokémon. With 200 Pokémon to recruit and a run of additional episodes after the main story that put other warlords in charge, there is far more here than the opening hours suggest.

Released in North America in June 2012, late in the DS's life, Conquest earned strong reviews, including a 9 out of 10 from IGN, and topped the Japanese sales chart in its launch week. It plays like nothing else in the Pokémon library: a full tactics game with real depth, wrapped in samurai-era pageantry and Pokémon charm. Strategy players get a smart, approachable campaign, and Pokémon fans get to see the series' creatures from an entirely new angle.
