Item Description

Here is the secret that makes the Atari 5200 version of Pitfall II: Lost Caverns special: there is a whole second adventure hiding inside it. In David Crane's original Atari 2600 game, the journey ends once Pitfall Harry has rescued his niece Rhonda, found the cowardly cat Quickclaw and recovered the Raj diamond. On the 5200 and the Atari 8-bit computers, collecting all three instead opens a portal to an entirely new set of caverns, with fresh obstacles and treasures, and a story beat that explains how Harry finally escapes.

The first quest is a landmark in its own right. Where the original Pitfall! sent Harry running sideways through a jungle, the sequel drops him into a huge, interconnected underground world that scrolls up and down as well as side to side. You climb ladders, swim underground rivers, ride a balloon up through towering shafts and dodge bats, condors, scorpions, electric eels and frogs while hunting for gold bars. Instead of a stack of lives, the game uses checkpoints: get hit and Harry is carried back to the last one you touched, losing points rather than ending the game. That forgiving design encourages exploration, and it gives the caverns a sense of being one continuous place to map out and conquer.

The extra quest was the work of programmer Mike Lorenzen, who added it while waiting for other ports of the game to be finished. It turned a faithful conversion into the most complete version of Pitfall II on any Atari console, and fans who know only the 2600 cartridge are often surprised to discover how much more adventure the 5200 holds.

Activision's early games had a reputation for doing things other companies' cartridges could not, and Pitfall II was among Crane's most ambitious designs. If you have already guided Harry out of the 2600 caverns, this is the chance to keep going, deeper into the dark, on a version built to give the story a proper second act.
