Item Description
Every fairy tale needs a villain with a tune, and Piper of the Swarm is Throne of Eldraine’s take on the Pied Piper of Hamelin. Its abilities tell the whole story in three lines.
For two mana you get a 1/3 Human Warlock that gives your Rats menace. Pay one generic and one black mana and tap it to create a 1/1 black Rat token, and once you have gathered three Rats, pay two generic and two black mana, tap it and sacrifice three of them to gain control of target creature. The sturdy 1/3 body holds the ground early, the Rats arrive steadily, and the late game ends with your opponent’s best creature fighting for you. In Commander it slots into dedicated Rat decks alongside cards like Marrow-Gnawer and Relentless Rats, but it is just as welcome in any black deck that wants a steady stream of evasive chump blockers that eventually becomes a theft engine.
