Item Description

Mr. Sunshine wants to give you free money. All he asks in return is your village's junk, which his giant robots will happily haul away, along with the corn, the trees, the water and, before long, a few of your neighbors. That cheerfully sinister setup is the heart of Pikuniku, a puzzle-adventure from the four-person indie collective Sectordub, published by Devolver Digital in 2019, and it sets the tone for a game that is silly on the surface and surprisingly pointed underneath.

You play Piku, a round red blob on a pair of long, wobbly legs, who wakes up in a cave and is promptly mistaken for a terrifying beast by the locals. Winning them over means kicking, pushing and rolling your way through bright, minimalist puzzles: knocking objects onto switches, lassoing your legs around hooks to swing across gaps, zipping down lines, riding minecarts and sliding through pipes. Coins collected along the way buy hats and other oddities, and every villager has something absurd to say. Soon Piku has joined the Resistance, a ragtag band of islanders fighting back against Sunshine Inc. to save the forest, the village and the worms' lake.

The music is a big part of the charm. The bouncy, goofy, endlessly hummable soundtrack comes from bo en (Calum Bowen, one of Sectordub's four members) and earned the game an Independent Games Festival nod for Excellence in Audio. There is also a separate local co-op campaign of nine levels, where a second player takes control of Niku, Piku's orange counterpart, and the two of you cooperate, or flail, your way to the boat waiting at the end of each stage.

Pikuniku is short, roughly a long afternoon's play, and it is the kind of game people finish with a grin and immediately recommend to a friend. This physical edition comes from Limited Run Games, the label known for giving digital-first indies a spot on the shelf, which makes it a natural pickup for Switch collectors drawn to the odd, handmade side of the console's library.

About the game

Pikuniku is a puzzle and adventure game set in a colorful world. The player controls Piku, a small red creature, guiding him through levels and solving puzzles that mostly involve kicking and pushing objects onto switches to open the way forward. Piku can lasso his legs to swing from hooks and zip lines, curl into a ball to roll, ride minecarts, and travel through pipes to reach new areas. Along the way the player meets villagers to talk with and can spend coins earned in levels on items such as hats. A local co-op mode lets a second player control a similar orange creature named Niku across a set of cooperative levels.
