Few games of the 8-bit era made as bold a statement as Phantasy Star. Released in Japan in 1987 and in North America in 1988, this Sega Master System RPG arrived while console role-playing games were still defining what the genre could be. As many players were just discovering Final Fantasy on the NES, Sega delivered something more ambitious: a science-fantasy epic with a fully realized world, first-person 3D dungeons and a sweeping story that held its own against anything of its time.
You play as Alis Landale, a young woman who swears revenge after her brother Nero is killed by the forces of King Lassic, the tyrant whose rule has plunged the Algol star system into misery and fear. Alis is a genuinely compelling hero with real stakes and motivation, and an unusual female lead for the era. Her journey gathers memorable companions, the talking, cat-like Myau, the warrior Odin and the wizard Noah, and spans all three of Algol's planets: Palma, Motavia and Dezoris.
Visually, Phantasy Star pushed the Master System harder than most players thought possible. The first-person dungeons, an idea borrowed from early computer RPGs, feature smoothly animated corridors that still carry an eerie atmosphere. The overworld and town sprites are colorful and detailed, and the enemy artwork has a distinct illustrative quality closer to classic Japanese science-fiction manga than to the fantasy tropes of its competitors.
Its place in RPG history is secure. Phantasy Star launched a series that would span decades and consoles, eventually reaching online worlds with Phantasy Star Online, yet this first entry remains the purest expression of the series' identity: intimate, strange and emotionally resonant. Playing it today is a genuine journey into what Sega's creative teams could do when they were swinging for the fences, and the origin point of one of Sega's signature franchises.
