Item Description

Long before the series carried Tiger Woods' name, EA's PGA Tour line began with PGA Tour Golf, and this Game Gear cartridge is the handheld edition of that very first game. It started life on DOS computers in 1990 before spreading to the Genesis, Super NES and Sega's 8-bit systems, with Sterling Silver Software handling the move to the Game Gear, and it set the template the series would follow for decades: golf presented as a professional tour, not just a lonely round against the course.

The rhythm is the classic one. Pick a club, read the wind, line up the shot and time the swing to balance power against accuracy, then do it all again with a wedge when you come up short of the green. Putting is where the nerves come in, because judging the line and pace of a putt decides whether a good drive turns into a birdie or a bogey. The game supports both solo rounds and multiplayer competition, so the scorecard can be a contest between friends as easily as a personal-best chase.

On a backlit color screen it is a calmer, more deliberate game than most of the Game Gear library, and that is exactly its appeal: a round played one hole at a time, easy to set down between shots and easy to pick back up. The franchise it launched ran on through the Tiger Woods years and into EA Sports PGA Tour, and this cartridge is the pocket-sized edition of where that whole story started.
