Item Condition

Game only: the cartridge in a protective holder, no box or manual. The photos are of this exact cartridge — look them over closely for its condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Pengo is what happens when a maze game discovers physics. Instead of running from enemies, your little red penguin goes on the offensive, kicking blocks of ice so they slide across the board until they hit something, ideally a Sno-Bee. Line it up right and one block can flatten several of them in a single slide, one of the most satisfying moments in any early-'80s arcade game.

Sega's 1982 coin-op gave the formula plenty of tricks. Push against the outer wall and it shudders, stunning any Sno-Bee touching it so you can waddle over and finish it off. Some ice blocks hold Sno-Bee eggs, which you can destroy by breaking the block before they hatch. Three diamond blocks are scattered around each maze, and pushing them into a line stuns every enemy and pays out a big bonus, though chasing it costs time you could be using to clear the board. That tug-of-war between playing it safe and going for the diamonds keeps every round interesting.

The Atari 5200 version, programmed by Sean W. Hennessy with graphics by Jerome Domurat, is a close copy of the arcade game with one notable change. The coin-op's famous use of “Popcorn,” the synthesizer instrumental, did not make the trip, so Atari wrote original music for the cartridge instead, giving this port a soundtrack of its own. The pace is deliberate enough that the 5200 joystick handles it comfortably, which is not something you can say about every game on the system.

Pengo never reached the fame of Pac-Man or Dig Dug in arcades, but it found an audience at home, and its puzzle-flavored action holds up better than a lot of its contemporaries. On the 5200 it is a charming, slightly offbeat game that rewards planning as much as reflexes.
