Item Description

Ask a Game Boy Advance collector which SP to play on and the answer usually comes back as a model number: AGS-101. This late revision of the clamshell SP replaced the original front-light with a proper backlit screen, and the difference is dramatic. Colors look clean and vivid, dark scenes are finally readable, and the light button toggles between two brightness levels instead of switching the light off.

In Pearl Pink, the 101 wears a soft pearlescent shell that looks as good folded shut on a shelf as it does open in your hands. The SP design is a small marvel on its own: the clamshell protects the screen when it is closed, the built-in rechargeable battery ended the era of carrying spare AAs, and the whole thing folds down small enough to vanish into a pocket.

That screen matters because the GBA library is so strong. Metroid Fusion and Metroid: Zero Mission, Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, Golden Sun, Advance Wars, The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and Pokémon Emerald all look fantastic on a backlit display, and Fire Emblem made its Western debut on the GBA in 2003. Original Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges play too, so one clamshell covers three generations of Nintendo handhelds, from Link's Awakening to Pokémon Crystal.

The one quirk worth knowing is that the SP has no standard headphone jack; Nintendo sold an adapter that plugs into the charging port. For playing a GBA collection on original hardware, a backlit SP is hard to top, and Pearl Pink makes it look as good as the games do.
