Item Description

In Lundi's village, a coolia born with wings is a bad omen, and the elders want the strange creature destroyed. Lundi saves it instead, raises it in secret and names it Lagi, and Panzer Dragoon II Zwei opens with the two of them running across the ground because Lagi has not yet learned to fly. That small, personal opening says a lot about what Team Andromeda wanted from this 1996 Saturn sequel: a prequel to the original Panzer Dragoon that cares about the bond between rider and dragon as much as the shooting.

Once Lagi takes to the air, Zwei becomes one of the finest rail shooters on the console. You sweep a reticle across the screen to lock homing lasers onto several targets at once, use the rider's gun for rapid fire, and rotate your view to the sides and rear to catch enemies closing in from every direction. The new Berserk attack adds a screen-clearing special move to the arsenal, and branching paths let you choose different routes through several episodes, which gives every replay something new to see.

The cleverest addition is Lagi's evolution. The dragon grows and changes form over the course of the game, and how well you play shapes the creature you end up riding, so a skilled run and a scrappy one can finish with noticeably different dragons. Unlockable extras in the Pandora's Box menu reward players who keep going back, and the whole thing is wrapped in the series' haunting mix of ancient ruins, strange bio-mechanical beasts and an empire whose warships darken the sky.

Zwei refined everything the original introduced, with richer visuals, smoother pacing and more freedom, and it was built exclusively for the Saturn. As the prequel, it is also the earliest chapter of the series' story. If Panzer Dragoon was Team Andromeda's opening statement, Zwei is the studio at full confidence, and it is the rail shooter to show anyone who doubts what the Saturn could do in 3D.
