Item Description
With Painful Quandary on the battlefield, every spell an opponent casts comes with a toll: lose 5 life, or discard a card. Neither option is pleasant, and that's the point. This five-mana black enchantment turns each opponent's turn into a choice between their hand and their life total.
In multiplayer Commander it scales beautifully, because it taxes every opponent at the table at once. Players either stall out and stop casting or burn through their hands and life totals trying to push through. It's a strong piece for black control decks, discard-themed builds that punish empty hands, and enchantment-heavy strategies. Pair it with cards that reward you when opponents lose life or discard, and the pressure stacks up quickly.
This is the Foundations printing, collector number 179, illustrated by David Palumbo, offered here in non-foil. Foundations arrived in late 2024 as a core set built to welcome new players, and this printing's enchantment frame and flavor text, a grim note on how Mishra's hatred for his brother delivered him into Gix's hands, give it a dark Brothers' War edge.
