Item Description

Every console of the era wanted its own Zelda, and the TurboGrafx-16 got a great one in Hudson Soft's Neutopia, which first appeared on the PC Engine in Japan in 1989 before reaching North America the following year. Hudson never hid its inspiration. The overhead view, the screen-by-screen overworld, the bombable walls and the hunt for hidden stairways will feel instantly familiar to anyone raised on Hyrule, but Neutopia wraps them in a brighter, more colorful look than the NES could manage and a structure all its own.

The demon Dirth has kidnapped Princess Aurora and stolen the eight medallions that keep the land at peace, and the young hero Jazeta has to win them back. The world is split into four spheres, each a self-contained region with its own overworld and a pair of dungeons guarding medallions, so the adventure unfolds in chapters: across the open land, down into subterranean caverns, out to sea and finally up into the sky. Inside the dungeons the rhythm is classic and satisfying. Clear a room, find the key, push the right block, bomb the suspicious wall and face the guardian waiting at the end. Jazeta's fire wand gives him a ranged attack alongside his sword, and the villagers and hermits tucked away in caves hand out the hints that point toward the next stretch of the journey.

What makes Neutopia so easy to love is its pace. The dungeons are compact and clearly laid out, the difficulty climbs steadily without turning cruel, and the whole quest fits into a few evenings, which makes it an ideal weekend adventure on original hardware. The bosses are big, colorful sprites that show off what the console could do, and the score has a sunny, adventurous swing that suits the game's storybook tone.

Neutopia did well enough to earn a sequel, Neutopia II, and it is the first game many TurboGrafx-16 fans recommend when someone asks what the console offered beyond its famous shooters. Playing it today is a reminder that a game built on a borrowed blueprint can still be something special: a carefully made, generous adventure from Hudson Soft at the height of its PC Engine years, and the natural starting point for the TurboGrafx side of the action-adventure shelf.

About the game

Neutopia is an overhead action-adventure video game developed by Hudson Soft. It was released by Hudson for the PC Engine in Japan on November 17, 1989. It was then released by NEC for the TurboGrafx-16 in North America in 1990. It was re-released for the Virtual Console service worldwide for the Wii in 2007 and in Japan for the Wii U on April 16, 2014; it was re-released for the PlayStation Network in Japan in 2010 and in North America in 2011. The game takes place in the land of Neutopia, where the evil demon Dirth has captured Princess Aurora and has stolen the eight ancient medallions which contain the wisdom and power necessary to maintain peace and prosperity throughout the land. It is up to the protagonist Jazeta to retrieve the eight medallions, defeat Dirth, rescue Princess Aurora, and save the land and its people. Neutopia is widely regarded as a clone of the popular Nintendo game The Legend of Zelda in nearly every aspect.
