Item Description

Dr. Grump has kidnapped Miss Piggy, and the only way to get her back is to win your way through a carnival. That's the setup of Muppet Adventure: Chaos at the Carnival, a family-friendly NES cartridge from Hi Tech Expressions that turns Jim Henson's characters loose on a midway full of rides and attractions.

Each of the first four stages belongs to a different Muppet and plays like its own little arcade game. Kermit rides an inner tube down a river, Fozzie Bear tries to escape a Fun House built out of desserts, Gonzo pilots a spaceship, and Animal takes the wheel of a bumper car. You can tackle them in any order, collecting the keys you need to reach the finale, where Kermit storms Dr. Grump's castle armed with nothing but a feather. It is a very Muppet way to mount a rescue.

Developed by Mind's Eye, the game first appeared on home computers in 1989 before arriving on the NES in 1990. Its variety is the point: rather than stretching one idea across a whole cartridge, it gives each character a mini-game that suits their personality, from Gonzo's daredevil spaceflight to Animal's crash-happy bumper car. That makes it a nice fit for short sessions and younger players, and the Muppet cast gives it a warmth many licensed games of the era never found.

For Muppets fans it is a charming piece of late-eighties Henson history, a cartridge where the whole gang gets a turn in the spotlight while Kermit, feather in hand, gets to play the hero.
