Item Description

Ms. Pac-Man started out as an unofficial upgrade. Engineers at General Computer Corporation built an enhancement kit for Pac-Man called Crazy Otto, Midway turned it into an official sequel, and the result became one of the defining arcade games of the early 1980s. In 1983 Atari brought her home to the 5200 SuperSystem, giving the console a fast, pure arcade fix built on the game that fixed nearly everything players wanted fixed about the original.

The rules are instantly familiar: clear every dot from the maze, swallow an energy pill to turn the four ghosts blue, and chase them down for escalating bonuses of 200, 400, 800 and 1,600 points. What makes Ms. Pac-Man better is everything around that core. The maze layouts change as you progress, bonus fruit and pretzels wander through the corridors instead of sitting still, and the ghosts are far less predictable than the patterns players memorized in Pac-Man. The side tunnels slow the ghosts down, so a well-timed escape through the edge of the screen can turn a desperate moment into a clean getaway, and a banana worth 5,000 points rewards the players who survive long enough to see it.

Atari's conversion has its own personality. The mazes are stretched out to fill the television screen rather than matching the tall arcade monitor, and the 5200's analog controller rewards a light touch around tight corners. Atari also corrected one of the quirks of its 5200 Pac-Man by giving Inky his proper blue color here. It is a satisfying, endlessly replayable game that suits short bursts and long high-score sessions alike, and on a 5200 shelf it is the Pac-Man game to reach for first.

About the game

Ms. Pac-Man is a maze-chase game and follow-up to Pac-Man. The player guides Ms. Pac-Man through a series of maze layouts, eating dots and bonus fruit while avoiding four ghosts. A round ends when all dots are cleared, and a life is lost if any ghost touches Ms. Pac-Man. The game has no conventional ending, instead continuing through increasingly difficult rounds until the player runs out of lives.
