Item Description

Ms. Pac-Man started life as an unauthorized upgrade. General Computer Corporation, a small company founded by MIT students, built an enhancement kit for Pac-Man boards called Crazy Otto, and Midway bought the project and reworked it into an official sequel in 1982. The result fixed nearly everything that had grown predictable about the original and became the best-selling American-made arcade game of all time.

The changes are what make it so much fun. The ghosts are harder to read, so memorized routes do not carry you the way they could in Pac-Man and every round demands attention. Bonus fruit wanders through the maze instead of sitting still, Sue takes over for Clyde, and the maze layout changes as you progress, keeping the chase fresh. Ms. Pac-Man herself, with her bow and beauty mark, became a star in her own right, and the game was a fixture of arcades, pizza parlors and bowling alleys for the rest of the decade.

The Atari 5200 version was programmed by Allen Wells and Steve Szymanski of General Computer Corporation, the same company behind the arcade game, and released in 1983. Like every home port of its era, it reshapes the arcade's tall, vertical screen to fit a television, but the four mazes, the wandering fruit and the cat-and-mouse tension all come through. The 5200's 360-degree controller takes a few rounds to get used to, but once it clicks, cutting corners and baiting ghosts into a power pellet feels quick and natural.

Plenty of players consider Ms. Pac-Man the best version of the Pac-Man formula, and on the 5200 it is a highlight of a system built to bring the coin-op experience home. It also makes a natural pairing with the 5200 Pac-Man, showing how much the sequel changed.

About the game

Ms. Pac-Man is a maze-chase game and follow-up to Pac-Man. The player guides Ms. Pac-Man through a series of maze layouts, eating dots and bonus fruit while avoiding four ghosts. A round ends when all dots are cleared, and a life is lost if any ghost touches Ms. Pac-Man. The game has no conventional ending, instead continuing through increasingly difficult rounds until the player runs out of lives.
