Item Description

Few home ports have a family tree quite like this one. General Computer Corporation, the team behind the arcade Ms. Pac-Man, also designed the hardware of the Atari 7800 ProSystem and developed its first wave of games in 1984. Then Warner sold Atari's consumer business, the finished 7800 was shelved, and it was not until 1986 that the system and its launch games finally reached store shelves. Ms. Pac-Man was among them, made by the people who knew the game better than anyone, for a console they had built themselves.

The game itself has not lost a step. Pac-Man's sweetheart, red bow and all, races through a series of maze layouts gobbling dots and energy pills while four ghosts close in. Clear the dots and a new round begins, each one a little faster and more dangerous than the last. Bonus treats bounce through the corridors instead of waiting politely in the center, and the ghosts behave with more variety than they did in the first Pac-Man, so memorized patterns only get you so far. Energy pills turn the tables for a few precious seconds, and the scramble to chain ghost captures before they flash back to normal never gets old.

The 7800 was designed to push far more moving objects than Atari's earlier consoles, and Ms. Pac-Man shows why that mattered. Colors are brighter, movement is smoother, and the whole presentation sits much closer to the coin-op than the flicker-heavy maze games many players remember from the 2600 era. It plays beautifully in short sessions and rewards long ones, too, as each new maze puts your favorite escape routes to the test.

On a 7800 shelf, this is one of the cartridges that defines the system: a GCC production of a GCC game, and a chance to play the most refined of the classic maze-chase games on the console that was supposed to bring the arcade home.

About the game

Pac-Man is in love! And what a star his sweetheart is, with her red ribbon and long eyelashes. Just like her leading man, Ms. Pac-Man chomps her way through mazes as she battles four ghosts. Round and round, back and forth, across the stage she races as she gobbles up dots, energy pills, teddy bears, fruit, and pretzels. Can she escape the marauding ghosts? Or will this be her final curtain? Will Pac-Man ever see his lady love again?
