Jason Voorhees, the Predator, a Xenomorph and Leatherface lining up against Scorpion and Sub-Zero: that is the pitch of Mortal Kombat XL, and it is every bit as gloriously excessive as it sounds. Published by WB Games in 2016, XL is the complete edition of NetherRealm Studios' Mortal Kombat X, bringing the base game together with every character from both Kombat Packs, nearly all of the alternate costumes released up to that point, and a round of gameplay refinements. It is the version of the game that fighting fans settled on once the post-launch content was finished.

The guest roster is the headline. The first Kombat Pack brought in Jason and the Predator alongside returning series fighters Tanya and Tremor, the earth-shaping ninja first seen in Mortal Kombat: Special Forces. The second added Leatherface, the Alien, the drunken master Bo' Rai Cho and Triborg, a Cyber Lin Kuei amalgam who can switch between Sektor, Cyrax, Smoke and a cyber Sub-Zero. Each one is built properly into the fighting system rather than bolted on, with full variations, finishers and plenty of in-jokes for horror and sci-fi fans.

Underneath the spectacle sits a deep, fast fighter. Every character has three variations that change their tools, so Scorpion, Sub-Zero or Kotal Kahn can each be played three distinctly different ways. A run meter speeds up the pace compared with the 2011 reboot, stage interactables let you vault off walls or hurl debris mid-combo, and the three-tier super meter powers EX specials, combo breakers and bone-crunching X-Ray attacks. Brutalities return as an alternative to the series' grisly Fatalities, and they are earned through specific conditions in a match, which makes landing one feel like an achievement.

The cinematic story mode follows a new generation, Cassie Cage, Jacqui Briggs, Takeda and Kung Jin, as Earthrealm's defenders face the fallen Elder God Shinnok. The first-person Krypt, packed with unlockables, gives solo players a long-term goal beyond the arcade towers and local versus. This is the PAL release, printed for the European market, and it is the cleanest way to own Mortal Kombat X with its whole cast together in one package.
